With the nation's
capital at its heart, metropolitan Washington spreads into Maryland and
Northern Virginia, stretching from the mountains to the sea. Over
3 million people make it the eighth largest metropolitan area in the country.
Most of them live beyond the limits of the District of Columbia.
They may drive in from a waterfront home on the Chesapeake Bay or a farm
deep in rural Maryland or Virginia, but they are Washingtonians nonetheless.
Those who call
Washington home may cross from the District to Virginia to Maryland and
back again several times a day as they travel to work, to shop or to enjoy
city or suburban nightlife. Washingtonians live on the quiet, stately
streets of Capitol Hill and in proudly independent Georgetown. They
also live amidst the rolling hills in Virginia's and Maryland's hunt country,
in modern waterfront communities and quaint fishing villages, in small
towns steeped in history and in brand new planned cities, all within the
metropolitan Washington area.

No longer can
it be said that the District of Columbia is strictly a government town.
Today, Washington is a major center for medical, biotechnical, electronics
and telecommunications firms engaged in research and development, as well
as a growing number of corporate headquarters. Three fourths of
those employed in the metropolitan area work in the private sector and
the region has the greatest concentration of scientists, engineers and
other professionals in the nation.
Besides being
well educated, the people who live here enjoy generally high standards
of living and are vigorous in the pursuit of their careers. The
city and its suburbs have become a major national and international business
center offering access to top decision-makers and a wealth of technological
resources.
Those who come
here to work also discover a diversity and quality of life unequalled
anywhere else. From cosmopolitan and city chic to rural gentry or
down-home, down-to-earth country living, Washingtonians enjoy a wide range
of lifestyles. Home may be at the very center of things in downtown
DC, in historic Annapolis, Old Town Alexandria or stylish Georgetown,
or in one of the many new communities flourishing around Metrorail stations
reaching out into the suburbs.
